The scam is targeting mostly businesses in the Danbury area, according to police.
The callers tell their victims that the electricity to the business will be shut off immediately if payment is not made, police said.
The caller will then instruct the victim to purchase prepaid gift cards from companies such as Green Dot Money or iTunes and provide the caller with the pin numbers, according to police.
The Danbury Police Department reminds the public that Eversource representatives never ask for instant payment in person or over the phone, and do not require the use of pre-paid debit cards such as Green Dot Money Pak or iTunes.
Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice via the U.S. mail, which includes the actions they can take to maintain service.
Those who wish to verify any unsolicited contact with Eversource can call the company at 800-286-2000.
Those who receive any suspicious calls are asked to contact the Danbury Police Department at 203-797-4611.
